Yeah- OK so you think Avocadoes are just for Guacamole. Nope! Although I do make a mean Guacamole thanks to my late husband's Aunt Carol.

In the last ten years, I've been on various health or diet food kicks and in some instances was warned about eating avocadoes because of it's "Fat content".
Other diets encourage eating several a week as a "good fat".

Well- I'm not here to challenge your dietary habits, your eating of the green goddess of fruits or whether you have a great gaucamole recipe.
I'm here to tell you about the awesome things that Avocadoes do for your skin.

Avocado contains essential fatty acids and other nutrients that help prevent premature wrinkling. It softens skin and restores a youthful appearance. Avocados are rich in minerals and high in vitamin A and all the B vitamins.
Containing more protein than any other fruit, avocados are the perfect nourishment to maintain healthy skin.

Why did we decide to talk about Avocadoes in September? Because we all had a hot and chapping Summer with loads of hot sun and drying sun damage.

Cucumbers

General Stomach Health

We should all know by now that Cucumber is great for your digestion and stomach health by reinforcing the intestinal mucosa. It is also rich in cellulose, protects the stomach and cleans the bowel system by regulating the intestinal flora. Some people with delicate stomach do have to be careful about eating cucumbers though.

What does it do for Skin?

Because of their wealth of water, Vitamin E and natural fats, cucumbers are one of the best remedies for the external care of your skin. The fats and water soften and hydrate your skin. This returns the freshness and texture it has been loosing as a consequence of the environmental pollutants and free radicals floating all around us.

Cucumbers are extremely antioxidant and very helpful for skins that have suffered from prolonged exposure to the sun or to Chemotherapy. Cucumbers are great for a number of skin problems including:

* skin spots
* face blemishes
* oily skin
* dermatitis
* rosacea
* seborrheic dermititis
* sunburns
* fire burns

Besides the emollient properties for your skin, it also has cosmetic properties. Plain ole Cucumber (pureed in your blender or Cuisineart) can reduce wrinkles better than most of the most expensive creams on the market.

Historically, Cleopatra used cucumbers, honey, olive oil and mud mixed together as one of her beauty secrets. Without the use of a Cuisinart - I'm sure some poor slave had to mash up the cucumbers to a pulp and mix in all other other ingredients by hand. It would be interesting to see the hands of that slave- and see if she had gorgeous young hands by which to apply those great beauty treatments to the skin of her queen.

Here's a great mask you can try at home. I've tried it and always look forward to mixing up a new batch and applying it when I wanna freshen up my skin and keep it from looking so haggard.

Cucumber Mask

* 2 cucumbers, sliced thin and with the skins
* 1/2 Glass of milk cream (I use fresh raw Goat's Milk)
* 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil
* 1 Tablespoon of local raw honey
* 1 Tablespoon of clean mud (I actually use Rose Kaolin clay or clay powder)

~Mix the ingredients with a blender or Cuisinart. I puree the cucumbers to a slush consistency, then add the milk, oil, honey and mud or powdered clay. I've noticed that if the cucumbers are "wetter", I don't need as much of the milk and the clay or mud works a bit better if it isn't so "wet".
~Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes
~Clean face with a fresh cut lemon, then apply the mask to face and neck (making sure to avoid getting too close to your eyes) and leave on for 1 1/2 hours. I know this seems like a long time - but natural beauty take time. This is a great time to lay down and rest, soak in the tub with some nice candles glowing, watch a movie that only you thoroughly enjoy or read a great book. Whatever way you can RELAX and take some time for yourself.
~Gently rinse off the mask and apply a natural Goat's Milk cream or your favorite facial cream or lotion. I use one that I make with Goat's Milk and more Cucumber & Cantaloupe juice.

I can't say enough about Cucumbers. Love them, grow them and enjoy them thoroughly inside and out. I even figured out how to puree them fine enough to add them into the cold process Goat's Milk soaps that I create. So...the next time you are at the Grocery and see a cucumber just sitting there looking nonchalant, grab it and use it on your face. You'll be glad you did!

Good Morning,

For years- I've been attempting to figure out what in the world to do with a Blog. Do you use it to repeat posts on Facebook or blip on Twitter? Something you email to your people or clients suing a different format? Who knows? What's the best answer?

Well- I went to a workshop the other day and learned that, yes- it could be used for those purposes and in those ways - but to best utilize it's abilities - a Blog has to grab the interest of it's readers.

So...I'll be using our Magic Moon SoapWorks blog as an educational setting from now on. I'll be sharing information and research that I've learned over the years concerning Natural Skincare, Skin Health, all natural Relaxation and Stress reducing modalities, and ways for you to renew and retain healthy youthful skin...naturally!

Hello everyone and welcome to the March Edition of our Magic Moon Newsletter. In case you’ve been buried under a rock or rather a foot of snow (like we have, you might not have noticed that we’ve been making HUGE changes lately.

What are those changes? Well- after much pain, planning, drawing and debate – we’ve changed our Logo and the look of our site. Not only that, but the bars are much bigger – a big, chunky bar of 6 full ounces. Not only has the size of the bar changed –
but we’ve reformulated our recipes for thicker lather and made the bars longer lasting, therefore more economical.

Along with the Logo, the site and the slight reformulation of the soap, we’ve also upscaled our packaging. We can’t wait to show you all the cool labeling – and we’ll show them off, one by one, in the next month on the site. We’ll also announce them on our Twitter and FaceBook page.

MMSW Exciting News for 2011

So, with so much going on with Magic Moon, you are probably asking yourself – what brought all this on? Well, for those of you that don’t know- Magic Moon is not only found online, but in boutiques and shoppes in the North Shore New England area.

In February, we debuted at the Grand Re-Opening of Biba Salon and Boutique in downtown Beverly MA. We are located in several Whole Food Markets now and will be debuting soon in such shops as Rouge Cosmetics of Salem, MA with our Essential Oil Skin Care collection known as Re-Nu’de. For now- we are making this one exclusively for Rouge in downtown Salem.

Last bit of exciting news is the swanky new Bath and Body shop of Salem… SCRUB! The owners of Roost and Beehive have been busy little bees this Winter and have procured the space and created a new concept shop in downtown Salem, MA called SCRUB – which will open no later than April 1, 2011. It’s all the buzz around town this past week. We can’t wait to get there.

Kate and her knowledgeable staff will be offering one of kind bath experiences that will pamper you like nothing else and we’re excited to get to be a part of it. We plan to be offering a variety of our luxurious Goat’s Milk soaps as well as our Hand and Body Lotions, Botanical Bath teas and Facemasks.

Hope every one had a great New Year and are sticking to their resolutions. That's a tough one - I know. Resolutions always seem like a great new start to the year- where you are going to actually follow through and continue them - and this is the year to do it. Then before you know it - three of the first 4 weeks are done - and you've slipped. I know I did. We all start out with the best intentions - right? Holiday Memories... Pay it Forward and Be Joyous!

"Well, It's Christmas time, pretty baby...". I just love that song! It helps to hear it - when you are rushing around like a maniac, too many things to do - to even make a list - because it wouldn't fit into your Mary Poppin's carpet bag of a purse that's crammed full as it is. Too much to do, and not enough time and/or money to get it all done - am I right?

Well- as I sit here, writing to all of you, drinking nice hot coffee from my hubby's old mug - I'm listening to Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song". It's our first Christmas without my late hubby - who we lost in January to a very quick and unexpected Heart Attack at 45. Needless to say, it's been a rough year and a rough holiday season. But- despite it all, life does go on.

There are so many out there, hurting from loss. Loss of so many kinds... the loss of our beloved soldiers in the war, loss of jobs just before the holidays or the loss of a job earlier in the year - that they still haven't recovered from, loss of family members and loved ones, terminally ill children in the hospital, ill loved ones - you name it.

Not to be depressive...but encouraging instead. As you go through your busy, crazy busy lives - please remember to take a moment and build memories.

Memories of baking cookies with your children - regardless of their age. it doesn't matter how old they are - they still love Rice Crispy Treats! Whether with Milk or spiked Wassail. My sons are 22 and 18 and I can still turn their head with a holiday treat!
Go see a friend and take them some of those cookies - it doesn't have to be fancy wrapped or be extravagant. It's the thought that counts.
Put up that darn tree. Even if you aren't in the mood, no one is gonna see it, nothing really to put under it this year...etc. DO IT!! You will see it! It will bring back nice memories and happy ones that you deserve to remember.
Take a breath and remember the reason for the season. Regardless of your belief system...Christian, Jewish, Pagan, etc - Remember Your reason for the season and celebrate it. The celebration of HOPE! Hope of New Beginnings, Positivity and so forth. HOPE!
It's NOT about all the presents you get - but the LOVE you are giving others. Whether it's in small bar of soap that I give to everyone in the course of my day as samples, a cookie, a cup of coffee to a cold stranger, a smile on the subway to someone who really looks as though they could really use it.

It all matters. Those little things that makes a day nicer... those are the things that we should all be doing for one another. Don't live to GET, but get to living and giving without expectations of a return on your kindness...Pay forward!

Happy Holidays and here's HOPING for a joyous and positive future! Enjoy what you have and don't take the little things for granted. Be Grateful and Joyous!

Winter in Salem, MA. The crisp air just off the ocean, fresh and clean. Shoppers scampering
to make their holiday purchases just in time, before the next snow fall. The weatherman said we would have a some a.m. snowfall today and tomorrow - no snow yet. Wouldn't it be great to have a job like that - be wrong 90% of the time and still get to keep your job? HA!

Today I went with my son's fiance to watch the Candy Cane making at the annual Holiday Open House at the Ye Olde Pepper Companie - what a treat. We had a great time and lots of great chocolatey and pepperminty samples.

Good morning all and Happy Fall!

I received an email this a.m. from a friend and soap fan. Her description of Fall was marvelous and I just had to share b/c I feel exactly the same way about it.

"With the passing of summer and fall upon us, feelings of excitement for the coming holidays grow. The smell of the leaves on the crisp, cold autumn wind and the scent of smoke from a fireplace kindles thoughts of warm blankets and hot cider and cinnamon. The sight of geese in formation on their way to warmer climates is a sign that soon the white blanket will be covering our landscape. I look forward to seeing the trees change to their fall wardrobe and watching the moon shine through misty clouds in the dawn and dusk of the day. I love this time of year!"

My entry for the 2010 PM Blog Party! -"My Practical Magic"

The movie Practical Magic - literally changed my life. I never imagined another adult life outside of being a medical professional, wife and Mom. But after seeing the film - I started dabbling in the interest of Herbs and Herbal Magic. I then met a fellow witch that taught me the ancient art of all natural soapmaking - and I was hooked. It's amazingly simple, after you get the hang of it and thoroughly enjoyable and therapeutic.

The line from Stockard Channing, you know the one..."My Darling Girl, when are you going to realize that being normal isn't necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage!" That line right there - then and there - caused me to reconsider what I had, what I was groomed for since childhood vs - what were MY dreams, did I want to ever be any more than I already was - or settle for what I was right then?

Like Sally in Practical Magic - I'm now recently widowed, from my soul mate of 24 years and attempting to still find my feet after 8 months. People really don't know what to do with me or what to say around me, some even consider me a project. Yuck! Everyone wants to help and I'm very appreciative.

But this week - I came to realize that "putting on my Big Girl Panties" didn't mean - suck it up and quit crying, repress my feelings, or work harder - but instead to step out on new found feet and work smarter as well as harder. I was meant to do this. Lee (hubby and deceased soul mate) coming into my life - made me a better and stronger person. Before he came around - I was the "yes girl" - a freakin doormat, a "People Pleaser". Double Yuck! In those months following his death - I started that silly little behavior again - being a doormat and the "yes girl". Darn it!

"Keep yourself busy, it helps!" - So I did - running around finding projects,jobs -overloading and in survival mode. "yes"-ing myself into a tail spin - because if I kept myself busy- it might not hurt so much. Yeah-right! Guess what? It doesn't actually help. We all have to find our own way though.

Putting on your Big Girl Panties - means not giving a lily white rat's ass what anyone thinks, and doing what you have to do, period. What they think you should do or say, feel or how to behave. You can't worry about what others think and do what you have to do to go forward and actually live again. Opinions are like hineys - everyone has one and very few are great!

"Putting on your Big Girl panties" means not being in survival mode and but instead creating the life you want for yourself by hard work and perseverance. After the worst possible thing you could imagine, happens to you - what are you gonna do? You have two choices - curl up and rot (ok granted we feel like doing that for awhile)

or find your feet again, stand up, fall down many a time - but keep getting up anyway.

Look at Sally in the movie - the bedroom scenes - sleeping all day, not showering(gross),tired all the time. The "visit" from wildchild sister, Jillian - was the kick in the pants she needed, to get started again. Not just the visit or having to go rescue her sister from a maniac- but it was what see needed to get jump started again.

No one is going to do it for you and if they did - what would YOU have anyway. It wouldn't be your accomplishments but theirs instead. It will probably be some of the hardest work you'll ever do, but by far the most rewarding.

That is what Lee would be saying right now, if he could. Why did it take so long to hear his words? With mourning - you tend to block a lot out and be numb - it's easier to get through the days and especially the nights. No one knows until they've been there first hand.

I'll never quite be the girl that was married to that wonderful and kind hearted man, but I gotta find the new Dana, decide to like her and work with her now. Sally did it and look at the new life she found. Do I want another guy in my life right now or even possibly ever? - nope! Had the best one the first time around.
I'm looking for the rest of it - the business and happiness that follows with a job well done.

So- regardless of what tragedy has befallen you lately, a death, a financial crisis, a huge change of any kind that has left you wondering "What the hell do I do now?" You have to get up on those feet, find your Magick and go forward. Practical magick I found inspiring and it continues to be so. I've found myself being able to relate to every female character in the movie at one time or another. I really think that is why we all love it so.

Go for it- Put your Big girl Panties on - and see what you get accomplished!

Magick Moon SoapWurks had a fabulous season with the Salem Farmer's Market hosted by our fair city, supported by the Salem Chamber of Commerce and organized by Salem Main Streets. We had one heck of a ride in October with our Halloween and Haunted Happenings festivities and businesses that we are vending for in Salem.

Well there is no rest for the busy, so we are sailing into 2010 with new scents and new products added to its already wonderful product line.

We've been playing catch up with our retail customers b/c we've had such overwhelming response to our wholesale division as well as our retail division's free samples program. The benefits of goats milk are legendary and has been used for centuries as a luxurious beauty aid.

Goats milk is naturally ultra-moisturizing. Goats milk soap contains capric, caprylic and capronic acids and natural occurring triglycerides. Otherwise known as good fats. I've had alot of our customers tell me that before using our products, that they barely had time to dry off before having to slather on lotion or creams to rehydrate their dry, flaking, or leathery skin. Since using soaps from Magick Moon SoapWurks, they report that after bath lotion routines are a thing of the past.

How we got started and how it changed things for us!

I began making the soaps as an all-natural alternative to the harsh, overdrying products for the acne prone skin of my sons, then 13 and 9. Kaleb and Aaron are now 21 & 17 respectfully,and even though they have the occasional hormonal breakout, their skin is much softer and clearer than when using the harsh anti-acne products. Hubby who suffered from flaky skin, rough and cracked elbows and patches of psoriasis on his legs and chin. Since bathing and shaving with our soaps- those issues have been a thing of the past for 6 years now. I had always had oily skin and breakouts even as an adult for many years. Once using our Goat's Milk soaps, the pH level of my skin was apparently equalized and I'm now in my mid-40's and not a wrinkle one. Hmmmm! nice!

Ingredients in our
Handmilled Goat's Milk Soaps

We make our soap completely from scratch, using raw ingredients and recipes we created. The ingredients we use to make our handmade soaps vary, depending on the type of soap made. All of our soaps are made with vegetable based fats, oils, and butters; Goat's Milk, botanical teas or herbal infusions, and of course sodium hydroxide or 'lye'.

Most of us have heard our whole lives that oil and water don't mix. And they don't - Unless you change their chemical composition. And sodium hydroxide does exactly that. It changes the oil and milk and water based herbal infusions, so that they can blend and become soap. Please make a mental note that although lye is one of the ingredients used to create our soaps, there is no lye left in our good-for-your-skin soaps once they are processed! Lye is transformed in the soapmaking process.

Each individual soap listed on our website will include the ingredients used to make that soap along with a general description of the soap. We also include all of this information on our labeling, whether it be our signature sops or our private labeling that we provide for merchants that carry our products in their shops.

Scent as An Ingredient
And lastly, let's talk briefly about scent. There are two ways to scent a soap - one way is completely natural and the other is not. The 100% Natural process that extracts scent from the flower, leaf or stem of a plant results in an Essential Oil. Some scents cannot be collected naturally or may be too expensive to extract for soapmaking purposes.

In that case, a Fragrance Oil is created in a Perfumer's Laboratory to simulate a scent. Any fragrances we use that are not essential oils are fragrance oils that have been directly derived from essential oils andThese fragrance oils are FDA approved, very high quality duplications, that will be appreciated by both your skin and your nose. Many customers with skin sensitivities will be looking for either Unscented Soap or soap made with natural Essential Oils. If we scent a soap with a 100% Natural Essential Oil, we specify that clearly in the soap's description.

NO YUCK in our Products!

These are "dirty" words (yucky chemicals and perservatives) that you'll never find in our products. We avoid them at all cost.

Animal Tallow (not synthetic and is moisturizing-but can be comediogenic, so we choose to use vegetable and nut based carrier oils in our soap creations)

You can find us at the Farmer's Market- all season- each Thursday- read on- to find the goodie you get just for coming to our tent and mentioning this post.

At the Old town Hall on historic Front street is the site of the 375 year tradition of the Salem's Farmer Market. Watch for the Magick Moon SoapWurks booth. We will be there every Thursday, come rain or shine- selling the great Goat's Milk soaps and lotions that you've all become addicted to.

Show special that day and each week- will be 4 bars for $20.

Each hand crafted bar will sell for $6, which is our everyday low price on the website- but if you buy 4 or more- it will be a $1 per bar savings. We will have a Mystery bar- that is a brand new and luxurious surprise. You'll receive a personal size of that bar- when you come by and mention this post.

Well- I've been asked for children's and baby soaps. I've got a formulation for a baby's Goat's milk soap- but as far as what parents are looking for in an all natural baby product- I don't have a clue. Scented lightly with essential oils and botanical, unscented, gluten free? I guess you see my dilemma, right?

I'm in the middle of product development for a Mommie and Baby line and would love some suggestions! I'm working on a Post Apesiotomy/Labor Healing Bath Tea, Honey and Oatmeal Baby Goat's Milk Soap, Hushaby Mountain (Lavender Baby Goat's Milk Soap) and Lullaby Bay (Baby Powder gluten free, lactose free Baby soap). Working on an all natural Baby Butt Balm too- but still working on all the ingredients for the most effectiveness.

Since my little ones are now 21 and 16- I'm sorta out of touch with what new parents are looking for in bath care for their babies. Any suggestions?

The Ultimate Spiritual / Magickal Bath

Bathe your way to becoming a perfect spiritually-sound goddess with this how-to guide (props for the bathroom, things to do before, during and after the bath.

A spiritual bath could help lift your spirits, relax your mind and make you smell nice to boot.

Although a spiritual bath is a great cleansing ritual prior to performing healing or magickal work, it also works wonders prior to going out on the town, or just as time for yourself at the end of a hectic week.

Taking a cleansing goddess bath is easier than you might think, and only requires a few basic ingredients that you can find easily.

What does a spiritual bath involve?

The art of a spiritual bath uses symbolism to embrace the four elements that support us all, and are the mainstay of any esoteric practice: Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

Earth gives us support and growth, it is the practical element without which we would never be able to reach out and find the spiritual as we always need to keep our feet on the ground.

Air aids our communication and relates to our intellectual abilities.

Fire is the spark of imagination as well as the passion and enthusiasm with which we live our lives as modern goddesses.

Water is the healing element, which embraces and encourages our emotions and feelings.

1. Embrace goddess-hood by creating a bath acknowledging all 4 elements.

Water is the easy one - after all, unless you're a freak, what else will you bathe in?
Fire should be represented by candles, carefully placed around the bath.
Earth can be represented in two ways; by the use of a crystal which has added healing properties or by using dead sea salts in the bath.
Lastly, Air can be represented by some incense lightly wafting in the corner, and an appropriate essential oil to invigorate your senses.

2. Choose the type of spiritual bath you want

The next step is to choose the type of magical bath you want in order to help you find that inner goddess.
(Essential Oil, Crystal of choice, Candle, Incense, Dead Sea Salts).

Uplifting & Invigorating
For an uplifting spiritual experience you will need orange or lemon essential oil, a carnelian crystal and some orange or yellow candles, plus dead sea salts and an incense of your choice.

Calming & Relaxing
To calm your shredded nerves and release an inner glow of relaxation try lavender or chamomile essential oils, an amethyst crystal, purple, lilac or indigo candles and of course dead sea salts and some relaxing incense.

Romance
If love and passion is on your mind, and you don't just want to be a goddess in the bathroom then you need some rose or ylang ylang essential oil, a rose quartz or rhodocrosonite crystal, bright red or pink candles, dead sea salts and some ylang ylang incense!

Focus
For a focusing bath that helps you concentrate on your inner needs then try basil or rosemary essential oil, a haematite crystal, some yellow or light green candles and dead sea salt.

Cleansing
Lastly for the ultimate cleansing bath, that will cleanse the body as well as the mind then combine tea tree, eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils, with a clear quartz crystal, white candles and dead sea salts.

3. Extra preparation for your magickal bath. Ready, Set, Go...

Once you have chosen the type of spiritual bath you require from the suggestions above, you need to do a little bit of preparation before you are ready to submerge yourself:

Have something to eat so that you don't lie there thinking about feeding your stomach instead of feeding your soul

Make sure that the dog/cat/mate/boy or girl next door cannot get in (unless you want the boy or girl next door to come in, in which case you are reading the wrong article)

Fashion a 'do not disturb' sign (wordage is up to you on that one!) out of an old cornflake box. Just Kidding- you get the idea though.

Ensure you have all the ingredients you need for the spiritual heaven!

If you choose to use crystals in your bath, check their properties and always cleanse them by running under cold water before using in the bath itself. If you are unsure about placing the crystal in the water itself then simply place it by the side of the bath.

4. Time for the magick circle

You don't have to do this bit. But why not try it? It'll put you in a different frame of mind. It'll give you a sense of respect about the amazingness of the bath you're about to have, it'll give you a shh-don't tell girly secret, and it's fun!

Make sure all methods of protection are in place; 'do not disturb' sign on door, all likely intruders locked out and as a last bit of protection cast a protective circle around you -

Face the North and thank the goddess of the north and of Earth for aiding you in spiritually cleansing quest

Look to the East and thank the goddess of the east and of Air for providing you with the concentration you need

Face the South and thank the goddess of the south and Fire for her imagination and passion

Look to the West, thank the goddess of the West and Water for providing the bath itself, and its healing and supporting qualities.

If you're not sure about this sort of thing and haven't the faintest idea what a goddess of the north is or would look like, either make up what you think she would look like, or just just say 'thank you, goddess of the north' and don't worry about it too much. Never worry!

5. How to run the spiritual bath

To draw the bath you need to fill the bath with water to the temperature of your choice and place some dead sea salts under the running water. Once the bath is full add 10 drops of the essential oil or oils of your choice and place the crystal in the bath or by the side of the bath. Light the candles and incense if used(make sure the candles are in a safe place and will not fall or cause a fire).

6. Once in the bath...

Now slip in the bath, let the aromas and the healing qualities of everything around you support you as you meditate quietly and embark on your inner journey to become the real you.

You can also try a visualization technique whilst in the bath by creating the ideal result you want for yourself, for instance if you are taking an uplifting bath then picture yourself full of energy able to tackle anything and always positive and happy, if its romance then visualize the man you are after melting at the sight of your goddess self and … well the rest of that one is up to you!

7. After your spiritual bath

Once you have finished and are suitably prune-like and clean, then step out of the bath. Dry off and close down the circle of protection by thanking each goddess in reverse order; West, South, East then North. Remove the crystal and cleanse it quickly by running it under cold running water and leaving it to dry in the sun or moonlight for next time.

And clean the bath.
